A visit to the Mitla Cafe

Taco Maven and a few of her pals spent Cinco de Mayo last weekend dining at the historic Mitla Cafe in San Bernardino, Calif., located right off Route 66.

The Mitla has receive a lot of attention lately, thanks to the recently published book “Taco USA: How Mexican Food Conquered America.” The Mitla was one of Glen Bell’s favorite places for Mexican food, and it inspired him to start the Taco Bell chain.

  1. Great looking food. Fun to see the restaurant that inspired Glen Bell to switch from burgers to tacos. A segment of All Things Considered on NPR last week was about this restaurant, purporting that it was no coincidence that fast food (both Taco Bell and McDonald’s) started in San Bernardino, where for decades Route 66 travelers stopped for a few minutes to refresh themselves before getting back on the road.
