Magazine features Route 66 in the desert

The Sun Runner, a magazine about the California desert, recently posted a long article about Route 66 from Victorville, Calif., to Kingman, Ariz.

Longtime roadie Jim Conkle is prominently mentioned in the piece. You can read it online here:

  1. The sun Runner get their feelings hurt when the owner of Amboy does not want to pay for advertising. Trashes Mr. Okura in this article very unprofessional they just ruined a great story. Maybe they should help instead of making things worse the the struggling town. Try keeping up the small ghost town for 1 year I’ll bet you’ll keep your mouth shut then. Amboy is a special place that is getting the much needed attention by the ownership.

    1. Yeah, that part of the article was snarky. But at least the writer wasn’t trying to hide anything — he was wanting advertising dollars from Okura, and he was miffed because he wasn’t getting any.

  2. Are there current articles with a good description of Amboy?

Much of what’s cited in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy%27s_Motel_and_Cafe appears to be 2008 and earlier. More current information on the restoration could be easily added to that page (as they let any danged fool edit over there) if there were a good, up-to-date source which could be cited for the facts. Most frustrating to read a good encyclopaedic summary of the history of the place, followed by a claim that as of 2008 the owner has big plans to restore the place and no update as to whether this was actually accomplished in the last five years.

I looked at https://thesunrunner.com/articles/Route-66 and all I see is either server errors or a plug for the printed version of the magazine – no useful info which could be cited in an update.

      1. Jim, it’s embedded. If it takes a long time to download, it’s a problem with the magazine’s servers, not Route 66 News’ servers.

  3. Thanks for posting this Ron.
The writer/publisher Steve has wanted to get out on the road with me for some time, so when we found the time we hit the road. His style of writing, as well as his great research, makes this a very good article.
It is getting a lot of good feed back. Anytime we can showcase the road, or any section of it, helps the business’s on the road.
The Route 66 Community will be hearing much more from Steve as well as our partnership.
