A Route 66 revival of a different kind

Rick and Jane McKinney of Our Heart Ministries will soon embark on a 2,800-mile cross-country trek — part of which will be on Route 66 — called “A Walk to Reclaim America” in an effort to spark a national spiritual revival.

Rick McKinney hopes the walk will be “part of what God is doing to bring spiritual renewal in America,” according to a news release from Agape Press.

“What we’re really hoping for is that people will begin to stand up and be counted — to let their voice be heard in their own communities, their own towns, and their own states,” (Rick) McKinney says. “And we know that, as that begins to happen, it will change the spiritual climate of the country.”

The couple says they are not walking across America to raise money for a political party, and in fact do not even believe the kind of change America needs can be accomplished by political or legislative means. “That kind of change,” McKinney asserts, “can only be accomplished when hearts and lives are changed from the inside out.”

The walk begins Jan. 1 at Santa Monica Pier, follows old Route 66 east to Oklahoma City, continues along Interstate 40 to Virginia, then heads north to Washington, D.C., where the walk will end about July 4. The couple’s walking schedule is here. The plan is to walk 20 miles a day, then use each Saturday or Sunday for rallies in local churches or public parks. The McKinneys are based from Ohio, but are in Harrison, Okla., to train for their journey.
