Kat of Massachusetts, who has a blog called Keep the Coffee Coming, already seems to know all the informal rules to traveling old Route 66:
My dream vacation would be to pack up an RV with the animals and take to the road. The first rule would be no major highway traveling. Part of the trip would be to find and follow the old Route 66. Nat King Cole made it sound so much fun. The second rule would be I’d have to stop at roadside attractions, the stranger the better. Now, where is the largest ball of string in the world? I’d map out the route with the most sights and head on out with my camera at the ready. The third rule would be no fast food restaurants. The object would be to find local restaurants, the ones where all the townies congregate. I’d hope they’d be serving foods you just don’t find anywhere else. Souvenirs and postcards would also be a must, not a rule, just a must. I’d tell everyone I wished they were here, no matter where here is. Tacky souvenirs would be part of the fun. Too bad they didn’t still sell those satiny pillows. I’d adorn my RV with all my wonderful finds including stickers on the back announcing where I’ve been, the more stickers the better. I’d chitchat with my fellow travelers and trade stories of the road. We’d have dinner, take pictures together and swap addresses. The next morning I’d wave goodbye and hit the road. Yup, that would be just about the neatest vacation ever!
