A road trip to think things over

It really stinks to read about the closing of yet another independent bookstore. Yet there’s this silver lining after Dean and Susan Avery shutter Ariel Booksellers in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.:

After the store closes, the couple plans to drive Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, Calif., stopping at independent bookstores along the way.

Susan Avery said she will spend a few weeks after the road trip looking at her career options.

By the way, I’d be shocked if the Averys didn’t include Tulsa’s own Steve’s Sundries bookstore during their trip.

My wife and I found that our long Route 66 trips were a good way to take stock in our lives and re-assess things. It was during one of our journeys that we hatched our idea to pull up stakes from the Midwest and move to Tulsa.

Here we are.
