Route 66ers help New Orleans

The San Bernardino County Sun reports that a group of folks in the city, including Stater Bros. Route 66 Rendezvous Revelers, donated more than $54,000 to St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana for relief after Hurricane Katrina.

A check for the donations was presented Wednesday night to Doug Rowand of Arrowhead United Way at the First Valley Credit Union offices. The funds will be dispersed by the United Way of Greater New Orleans.

“St. Bernard Parish was selected for this donation because it is one of the poorest,” Rowand said. “It will be a long time before these people rebuild their community, but in the meantime they still have basic needs, food, utilities, clothing.”

More than $20,000 of the total was donated by the public at this year’s Route 66 event.
