Fix ‘er up, roll ‘er out

A couple fellows with Petersen’s 4 Wheel and Off-Road magazine were getting cabin fever in Los Angeles. So they acquired a frighteningly dilapidated Jeep pickup free of charge, repaired it and took it out into the Mojave Desert.

Their excursion closely paralleled Route 66, as they rolled past Newberry Springs, the Bagdad Cafe, Daggett, Victorville and Ludlow. Check out the many photos on the site, including the desert wildflowers thriving after the 100-year rains last spring.

At the Bagdad Cafe, the author said the restaurant was “oddly overrun with French tourists.” Actually, this isn’t odd at all. The cafe has become a frequent destination for European tourists since the quirky 1987 movie “Bagdad Cafe,” also known as “Out of Rosenheim.”

The “Bagdad Cafe” film could serve as one of the examples of the beer commercial question: “Why are foreign films so … foreign?”
