I just got off the phone with Ruth Trew. She and Delbert still have no electricity, and wildfires in the Texas Panhandle have burned all but 75 acres of their 2,500-acre ranch. But they and their home are safe for now, even though they’re keeping an eye on another wildfire near Childress.
Ruth said cattle on their ranch took refuge from the flames behind an earthen dam. Also, the Trews’ Bull Canyon complex was spared.
They’re not out of the woods yet. High winds today are forecast to whip up the fires again.
I live in Tulsa. I remember fondly road trips I took with my parents during the 1940s, especially the family diners.
We have one of those diners (no it wasn’t built in the 40s, but it is the closest thing to that type of diner that I know to exist around our area of Route 66.
Here’s the bad part: Their property borders property on which Tulsa University, and within the next two months, Metro Diner will have to move, and they have not announced their plans regarding re-opening in another location. So, if you have never enjoyed this diner, you may want to visit them pretty soon. Very good chicken-fried steaks, delicious hamburgers. Cokes in a bottle are usually available. Have you ever tried a Monte Cristo Sandwich? My husband’s favorite. Elvis and Marilyn Monroe pictures everywhere, and the first thing you will see, going through the lobby, is the back-end of a beautiful 1957 Chevy, used as an entry counter.
Also, please encourage them to definitely relocate to another location that is on Route 66, won’t you?
