I'm between sessions at the Route 66 Summit in Albuquerque, before the festival starts in earnest. The nice part is that you hear a lot of news from the movers and shakers of the Mother Road. Here's the latest tidbits:
A Phillips 66 station at 10th and Military streets in Baxter Springs, Kan., has been purchased and will be converted into a Route 66 museum. Dean Walker told me it will take six to eight month to have the property ready.
— The long-shuttered Bent Door building along old Route 66 in Adrian, Texas, has been purchased and will be converted into a tire shop.
— Not only is New Mexico painting Route 66 shields on the road to guide travelers, but so are Kansas and Texas.
— New Mexico is about to issue a commemorative license plate. It has a Route 66 shield on the left side, with the words "Get Your Kicks" tentatively planned along the top.
That's all I have for now. I'll report more stuff when I get it.
