These days, you can do more than just get your kicks on Route 66. Traveling west on the “highway that’s the best” through Arizona, from New Mexico to the California border, you can hike among one of the world’s largest concentrations of petrified wood, explore a desolate meteor crater, wander remote ghost towns and follow in the wagon wheels of pioneers. The route serves as a living museum, preserving a slice of Americana from the days of the western migration to today.
