A look at the Western Trail Trading Post

We’ve had the pleasure of talking to John Dunning several times at his Western Trail Trading Post in Oklahoma City. The antiques business, located on a more obscure alignment of Route 66 at 9100 N. Western Ave., has been around only five years, but he’s a tireless champion of the Mother Road.

The Daily Oklahoman wrote a story about him today.

“It’s kind of a tribute to the old Route 66 trading post,” Dunning said. “We’re just always adding stuff to make it look like something they would have seen in an old Route 66 road trip,” Dunning said. […]

Dunning said the store is full of bits and pieces of Oklahoma history. Even the building’s wood floor was salvaged from an old department store downtown.

Formerly the building was a garage, and Dunning bought it in 1973 and used it mostly for storage until he opened it as an antique store. […]
During the spring and summer months the building’s pavilions become an antique marketplace. Several antique dealers travel to the trading post on Saturdays, and live music is played on the Woody Guthrie Memorial Stage.

The Western Trail Trading Post’s Web site is here.
