A preview of Michael Wallis’ Lincoln Highway book

Road warrior and author Brian Butko dropped me a note Friday, telling me that he has received a cover image of Michael Wallis‘ upcoming book, “The Lincoln Highway: From Times Square to the Golden Gate.” The cover is shown below:

There’s no set release date for the book, except it’ll be out this summer. It’s so new, Amazon.com doesn’t have it for preorder yet (unlike Wallis’ upcoming Billy the Kid book). However, the Lincoln Highway book can be preordered from the publisher here for $39.95.

Here’s a description:

It began in 1913 with a glorious new highway — stretching across 3,389 miles and 13 states — that connected the bright lights of Broadway with the foggy shores of San Francisco. It was a magnificent and meandering road that enticed millions of newly motoring Americans to hop into their Model Ts and explore the fading frontier. The Lincoln Highway. It was the road of Gettysburg, Pretty Boy Floyd, Notre Dame, the Great Salt Lake, and the Gold Rush Trail. Once a symbol of limitless potential, it is now undergoing (as Route 66 did twenty years ago) a miraculous revival. With hundreds of new and rare photographs provided by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Michael S. Williamson, this ode to a bygone era guides us across the true spine of the country, exploring vintage diners, Art Deco buildings, and funky roadside attractions, all waiting to be discovered. 300 color illustrations.

One thing I noticed is the Lincoln Highway book cover bears some resemblance to Wallis’ “Route 66: The Mother Road.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that. 😉

Even though this site concentrates on the Mother Road, I have no problem occasionally shilling for other historic roads. The Lincoln Highway and the National Road both provided the template for the Main Street of America.

  1. I started with 66 but have now “branched” out to Lincoln Highway and US-20. This should be a great read. Michael just has a way with words.

  2. Will you be doing a book tour in Canton. I am the director of the Canton Classic Car Museum I am looking forward to having your book in the gift shop!
    It looks great!
