The Shrine of Our Lady of the Highways, which has stood along Route 66 near Raymond, Ill., since 1959, now has a Web site that was launched a few days ago by Peter Stork, of Digital Route 66 fame.
Stork tells me of the site:
I’ve developed it for my future in-laws (Illinois Rt 66 Hall of Famer Francis Marten’s son Lee, who manages the Shrine now and lives just two doors up on 66), and we’re hoping to have a 50th anniversary celebration in October of 2009, but that’s, of course, a ways off.
The site is well-done. It contains wallpaper (including one of the images that I used above), a history of the shrine, directions, a guestbook, pictures of artifacts, a separate Route 66 page, and vintage photos from the shrine’s construction, dedication and pilgrimages.
