Bruce Huskins wants to start an annual garage sale along the shoulder of old Route 66 from Elkhart to Atlanta, Ill., on Memorial Day weekend, reports the Lincoln (Ill.) Courier.
That’s about 25 miles. Huskins is trying to get a thumbs-up from the Lincoln City Council and Logan County Board. Several area politicians reportedly have given their endorsements to the event and pledge to provide technical assistance, such checking easement regulations.
Logan County Tourism director Geoff Ladd brought up a good suggestion, though:
… Ladd said today, he likes the idea, but wants it coordinated with another tourism event.
“We’re looking at making it one of fundraisers for Route 66 Heritage Foundation of Logan County,” Ladd said. “I think he’s got a really good idea. If we can tie it in with Route 66 projects, it will be more well received. We plan on meeting with him very soon.”
Huskins got the idea for the Route 66 garage sale from the World’s Longest Yard Sale on U.S. 127 in between Covington, Ky., to Chattanooga, Tenn. It is 450 miles.
To give you an idea of that massive scale, a similar event on Route 66 would have to go from Quapaw, Okla. (near the Kansas state line) to the outskirts of Amarillo, Texas.
I know it would take a lot of planning and coordination to implement something like this but I think it is a wonderful idea and
hope it truly happens. I will keep watching to see if anything
develops.
We are interested in touring the U.S. 127 Sale but Oklahoma would be much closer to our home.
Good Luck.
My husband and are planning a vacation by traveling the entire distance of Route 66. I thought that I had seen a travel program featuring the world’s biggest yard sale on rout 66, so I was trying to plan the vacation so that it would be at the same time of the yard sale. You can just imagine how sad I was when I found out today that I had my facts wrong. It would be a grate Idea to have the world’s biggest yard sale on route 66. As we baby boomers get older, we find that we have a great interest in finding out about the things that had a lasting effect in our lives…Route 66 is one of those thing. I think that this would be quite profitable for those states that participated. I US 127 generate that kind of attention, one only know the endless potential that Route 66 has since it is so well known not only by America but also the world.

PS This is the fourth year for the HNR. The first year the event spanned a distance of 37 miles from Richmond IN to Knightstown IN. The second year the event covered the entire state of IN. Last year, the event covered 824 miles from to help commemorate the Bicentennial of the National Road—-America’s First Interstate.
I’m wondering if there are plans for a rt. 66 yard sale this year and when.
I think there are a lot of us that have wanted a Route 66 yard sale since they showed the yards and yards of yard sales (127) in Alabama, TN to OH. on HGTV. I dream about it going as far as each County & State wants it. It would have been perfect to have had one when we built the new Route 66 museum in Tulsa. It would revitalize every outskirts areas and rual areas like Foyil with the Totum Poles, The Blue Whale, Red Fork with the trains and Olies Resturant just to name a very few……..With the economy the way it is now, I can see everyone who has a business and home along Route 66 turning out fantastic finds for great deals! Oklahoma and surrounding States need this! Let’s figure out how we can make this a reality!
