From the Montgomery (Ala.) Advertiser is the story of Diana Dixon, who plans to drive her Harley-Davidson three-wheel motorcycle all the way to Fairbanks, Alaska, by her 64th birthday on June 18.
Of course, there will be side trips on the way:
She’s mapped out her itinerary and plans to touch as many states as possible on an adventure she figures will include about 5,000 miles up and 5,000 miles back.
“I’ll drive up to 600 miles a day, but I plan to stop at as many interesting places as possible, including the northern rim of the Grand Canyon,” she said. “I’m also going to take Route 66.” […]
A proud member of the “Ladies of Harley” group, Dixon is a fan of black leather –including her shiny pants and vest. She also wears a black Harley-Davidson T-shirt.
She dislikes interstate travel and will concentrate on state and country roads as often as possible on her way to Alaska. She’ll also have to make plenty of stops because her trike only has a 4-gallon tank.
“I get good mileage, but I had to stop and fill up five times after I left my home in Florida,” she said. “I don’t want to think of how much it’s going to cost for gas on my trip.” She estimates her journey will set her back more than $5,000, but that hasn’t stopped her. Her children are supporting her all the way on her dream quest.
“They’ve told me: ‘Mama, you’ve worked so hard — you educated us and gave us a good perspective on life,’ ” she said. “They also said I deserved it and I have to agree with them on that.”
