County gives grant for Route 66 garage sale

The finance committee of Logan County, Ill., awarded a $4,000 grant to the Route 66 Heritage Foundation of Logan County to help with next year’s 37 Miles of Smiles, also known as the Route 66 garage sale, reported the Lincoln Courier.

“It was really a remarkable first-time event,” Ladd said. “Being that it was a first-time event and our foundation put it on, we actually took a little bit of a loss, which is pretty typical.”

Ladd said the event had 80 vendors this year, but hopes to have as many as 180 next year. He said the garage sale brought many people into the area and said several businesses reported increased traffic during the weekend.

Having been involved with several small-town festivals, I can attest that if you lose just “a little bit” of money on a first-year event, you did really well. Chances are good that you’ll turn profits in subsequent years.
