Old-time motels hang on

Lara Hartley of the Victorville (Calif.) Daily Press takes a look at several good, vintage motels on Route 66 in the area, including the Wigwam Motel in Rialto, the Route 66 Motel in Barstow, and the Downtown Motel in Barstow.

And for those of you who are looking for such properties to buy, the Route 66 Motel is up for sale after 25 years of ownership by Red and Mridu Shandil.

  1. Does anyone have an idea where the oldest lodging establishment, either open or closed, is on Route 66? My reason for asking is on a recent research trip along an original alignment of Route 66 in western Arizona I found a small stone cabin buried in a trailer court that caught my attention.
The cabin, two seperate rooms, is now used for storage. The owner of the property was unsure of the age but said when he bought the property there were ten cabins, two seperate rooms in each. They were in such bad shape he took them down and kept the remaining set for use as storage.
This portion of the highway was bypassed about 1938. With that in mind I would guess mid 1930s for a date of construction.
    Any ideas or thoughts?
