This is a video of Slaid Cleaves‘ recording of Fred Eaglesmith‘s song “White Rose” and Emily Priddy‘s collection of photographs of historic Route 66 gas stations.
The story is about an old gas station in Eaglesmith’s native Canada, but the story itself is quintessential small-town Route 66.
The sound in the video wasn’t supposed to be this tinny, but I find it somehow works with the flickering images of decay.
Emily has issued a challenge:
I’ll send an El Vado Motel bumper sticker to the first Route 66 enthusiast (other than Ron) who can correctly identify the location of every gas station in this video.
Just for the record, I wasn’t able to identify at least four of the images. So I wouldn’t have won a prize anyway.
UPDATE: The answers for all the images are here.
