Don’t steal me!

Regrettably, Route 66 road signs are stolen all the time. This isn’t news to roadies.

The travel blog for OnMilwaukee.com reported on the most commonly stolen road signs. To provide some humor to your day, here’s the whole list:

  • Bong Recreation Area in Bristol, Wis.
  • Abbey Road / Penny Lane
  • Beer Road in Orange, Australia
  • Condom, France
  • Corona Street in Denver, Colo.
  • Dildo, Canada
  • F—ing, Austria (only 30 minutes away from Petting, Germany)
  • Haight Street and / or Ashbury Street in San Francisco
  • Intercourse, Pa.
  • Lost, Scotland
  • Mary Jane Way in Ashland, Ore.
  • Ragged A** Road in Yellowknife, Canada
  • Route 66
  • Shag Point, New Zealand
  • Southpark Drive in Blacksburg, Va.
  • A road sign between the English towns of Ham and Sandwich was changed from “Ham Sandwich” to “Sandwich Ham” after it was stolen numerous times.
  • Any sign with the numbers 69 or 420 (the latter is a marijuana reference.)

Apparently there’s nothing like sex and drug references to boost the value of a purloined road sign.

  1. One of my favorite road signs in southern Illinois points in opposite directions to two different little places. WARE is one; WOLF LAKE is the other. No, I haven’t stolen it. Yet.

  2. Two signs from around the Phoenix area that are high on the theft list are “Carefree Highway” of Gordon Lilghtfoot fame, and “Joshua Tree Lane”, of U2 fame.
