On Monday, the owner of the World’s Largest Rocker decided to show the world — and the Guinness Book of World Records — that his big rocking chair really does rock.
Dan Sanazaro, owner of the Fanning U.S. 66 Outpost & General Store in the Route 66 hamlet of Fanning, Mo., installed the 42-foot-tall rocking chair this spring as a way to draw attention to his business.
To certify his chair is the world’s largest, Sanazaro has to show it is functional. So the chair, which is usually secured and stationary for safety reasons, was briefly cut loose from its moorings on Monday.
Sanazaro said it took only two men to get the 27,000-pound chair swaying. “It was built right,” he said.
The only viable competitor for the World’s Largest Rocking Chair title is Big John in Franklin, Ind., and Sanazaro’s specimen is at least 10 feet taller. Sanazaro is busy filling out the rest of the required Guinness paperwork now, and said he expects confirmation by late September that his chair is the world’s largest.
