The city of Tucumcari made a strong bid but failed last month to gain a license for a casino and horse-racing track.
But apparently the effort has created some positive side effects.
Local officials who made a bid for the “racino” license met with Gov. Bill Richardson, and he pledged to bring future economic development to the region, reports the Quay County Sun.
Among the projects:
- A cost-sharing pact with a solar manufacturer considering locating in Tucumcari.
- Millions of dollars for renovations to downtown Tucumcari.
- Funds to complete the wind turbine at Mesalands Community College.
- Funds to build dorms at Mesalands.
- Consideration in placing major electric transmission lines to carry electricity from local wind power.
- A review of the alignment of U.S. 54 through, which current bypasses Tucumcari’s Main Street.
And here’s the big one, in my opinion:
- The creation of a statewide Route 66 Film Festival to be held annually in Tucumcari.
That’s all there is on the details, but these are good potential developments, indeed.
