Try the fried pie

Within the past few weeks, the old Wings Hamburger restaurant at the old Route 66 location of 3409 E. Admiral Place in Tulsa had reopened.

It’s now called April Jo’s Hamburgers, although the Wings sign is still featured prominently. The new owner boasts experience from the nearby Family Diner and the fabled Linda-Mar Drive-In in west Tulsa. You can read more about her here.

The original restaurant dates to at least the 1950s. In 2006, Wings was rechristened as Wings Hamburgers and Brother Arthur’s Balilian Fish. The fish sandwiches there were enormous and fantastic, but that restaurant’s incarnation didn’t last long.

The hamburger was just a notch below the great burger joints in Tulsa — which means the burger was really good. The meat was crisp around the edges, and freshly made.

But April Jo’s is making a name for itself with its fried pies. They look a lot like a turnover, and feature flavors in apple, cherry, apricot, blueberry and peach. Each has a white-icing glaze, and they’re just $1.79 apiece. And they’re sinfully delicious.

April Jo’s is open for lunch every day but Sunday. So if you’re cruising Tulsa’s earliest alignment of Route 66, you have another dining option.
