The 126-year-old railroad depot on Route 66 and Illinois 113 in Braidwood, Ill., has been donated to the city by its owners. A nearby nuclear plant also gave $30,000 to the city to help defray the costs of moving the depot to Center and Main streets, reports the Joliet Herald-News.
While the depot anchors the history of the town, the city is moving forward with a Main Street redevelopment project in the heart of the town, designed to bring in new commercial vitality, Grygiel said.
Braidwood Area Historical Society President Dee deGroh said that the goal, among other uses being explored, is to develop a historical museum there.
The owner Berkot’s Super Foods, which is near the current site of the depot, wanted to use the land for additional parking.
