Sorry I’m a little behind the holiday but I just found this and have to share my memory of seeing the E Street Band do this song in Atlanta’s Fox Theater in 1978. At the time, Bruce sometimes told a story about crossing the street to avoid a menacing figure that turned out to be Clarence Clemons. It was presented as being their first meeting and was typically the introduction to “The E Street Shuffle”. He told the story that night only it was modified a bit and the shadowy figure who Bruce crossed the street to avoid but who then crossed the street himself was Santa Claus (who happened to have his saxophone). That was the introduction to “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” with plastic snow falling on the stage.
