“GMA Weekend” on the Mother Road, Part 2

Here’s the other half of the segment that “GMA Weekend” did about Route 66 from Clinton, Okla., to Albuquerque. It takes on a more thoughtful and contemplative tone.

  1. Outstanding, loved the POV and theme they used. Quinta Scott’ish or TOm Teague like in their approach. It’s nice to see someone approach the topic with a bit of realistic POV, rather than the usual Wallis School method of Route 66 as some sort of carnaval.

My bet is that enough people saw the piece, and that maybe a few, especially with the economy this year might just travel down a part of the road.

For some reason, I find myself more interested these days in the road from Clinton, OK to Santa Rosa, NM. Too me, it’s the transistion point between the west and midwest. It’s a unique area. As a Chicagoan, whenever I drove the road, that’s where you really began to lose the eastern sense and begin to feel as if you were somewhere new.

On my last trip down the road, I ironically stayed over in the Tradewinds and drove west all the way to Gallup and the El Rancho in one long day. I ended up spending a lot of time in Texas, especially Shamrock, Mclean and Vega. The vast emptyness of the area, it’s slow and quiet pace, somehow attractive. I almost changed my plans and stayed over in Vega. Maybe next trip, I’ll do that.
