We actually met Hank Thompson at the Illinoise River, near Talequah, around ’79-’80. He was a nice man. My cousin and I floated down the river in our innertubes. When we got out, Hank and his group were getting in their pickup. They gave my cousin and me a ride back to our campsite.
Several years later, in the late ’80’s-early’90’s, my parents met him and talked about the Illinoise River with him.
They just don’t make them like Hank Thompson anymore. He could be singing the alphabet or from the telephone book and still make goosebumps rise on you. I’m from the deep South and love the song, Oklahoma Hills. Hank and those that were of that era, could make you “feel” a song, not just hear it. While we have good singers today, the ones from yesteryear can’t be beat. Thanks for putting this on your website. Just to watch him sing, he seemed to really enjoy what he did for a living.
Way down yonder in the Indian nation… Hank was such a fun, engaging performer. I really, really regret never getting to see him play. But I came along pretty late in the game. It’s the curse of the classic country lover in the modern era, I guess.

I’m not even an OK native, but this song always makes me a little teary.
