For the second straight year, the Lift to the Rocker event at the Fanning 66 Outpost on Route 66 near Cuba, Mo., raised funds for the Cuba Volunteer Fire Department.
For $5, participants could get the rare opportunity to be lifted by a fire department bucket truck to the seat of the store’s 42-foot-tall World’s Largest Rocker for a photo op.
From the news release:
Cameras recorded the event for many of the participants. The parking lot was clogged with cars, some with plates from Illinois and Oklahoma. Families, couples, and people of all ages waited to be lifted up to the rocker. Sporadic showers did not seem to dampen the spirits at the Outpost. Inside, sales of postcards and t-shirts were brisk as visitors enjoyed the Outpost’s eclectic mix of merchandise that is interspersed with examples of the business’s taxidermy center such bobcats, fish, and pheasants. Handcrafted rockers and chairs were handy places to sit out the showers.
The store also hosts the annual four-mile Race to the Rocker footrace on Route 66. The 2010 race will be March 27.
UPDATE: Jane Reed informs me that the fundraiser generated about $1,200 for the firefighters. At $5 a pop, that’s impressive.
