A plug for Route 66’s best guidebook

Dan Rice, owner of the 66-to-Cali souvenir store on the Santa Monica Pier, explains his endorsement of Jerry McClanahan’s “EZ66 Guide for Travelers” guidebook of Route 66.

It’s an important to note that McClanahan maintains a Web page that contains regular updates to the guidebook. It’s recommended that you consult that page before heading out on your Route 66 journey.

Also, the “EZ66” guide can be purchased through its publisher, the National Historic Route 66 Federation. However, it’ll be a package deal with at least the Route 66 Dining and Lodging Guide.

You also can buy it from the Amazon widget on the left.

And, yes, we get a cut of the action so we can help defray the costs of this website.

  1. Yes, McJerry’s EZ guide here we refer to it to the Travelers as the bible of Route 66 travel. I agree on the purchasing of it from the National Federation. I hate people using Amazon, even if % of its proceeds benefit this website for the main reason, it puts buyers in the “I will just buy my Route 66 needs on Amazon!” There are several places from Chicago to Santa Monica on Route 66 that offer it as well. Remember these places are purchasing it from the National 66 Federation. Purchasing it from a Route 66 business, is supporting both. If you don’t purchase from a Route 66 business, then we won’t be selling them and there will be no need for us to buy more from the National Route 66 Federation. Many 66 places offer both the Travel and the Dining/lodging guide as well. Purchasing both at same time at our place will save one over $3.00 total on purchasing price. Many of the 66 places, like Amazon, offer it on an online catalogue page from their website. So remember help support all of Route 66.

Thank you, Rich, Big Red and Rest of Queen Montana’s legacy

    1. I support buying from a Route 66 business, Rich, and always have.

However, if a prospective Route 66 traveler lives far from the road, it does him or her no good to wait several hundred miles into their trip before they have the ability to buy the guide. People want to buy the guide BEFORE they travel on Route 66. Amazon gives them that ability.

I do wish the Federation would offer the guide alone, instead of piggybacking it to another publication.

  2. We started our trip west with a different book that had a copyright of the same year. Once we got to Groom Texas (from OKC) we realized that the cover was new, the guts were 5-6 years old and several things had changed.

I found the E-Z guide at the Midpoint Cafe. It was a great book and easy to use.

Last year I thought I had lost it and bought another one. (found the old one and gave it to some friends) We keep our copy in the car “just in case”

  3. Rich, this is the ‘Catch-22’ – most folks buy from Amazon to ‘prepare’ them for the trip – or to show their love for the route as they might not get to travel ANY part of it for quite sometime, so I will have to agree with Ron on this one – as I have a link to Amazon on my site as well. I expect ZERO from it – and do not count on a dime from it – but it is nice to have a convenient link for visitors…

BUT, you know every time I stop at your shop, I almost always buy something to support you and support what you do.

I am not one of those who need to buy every single item with a Route 66 logo on it, and ironically, I turn down more than my share of free ‘gifts’ or items from so many places I stop at. I tell the business owners I am there to help them – not get free things – it takes away from their bottom line.

This is why I push for ALL of those who sell items to have a page on their website (if they have one) where folks can buy from them DIRECTLY.

I know you do – but you would be SHOCKED how many do not – and then they usually end up struggling.

    Just my opinion…
