Replica trolley soon will run on Amarillo’s Sixth Street

A replica of an early 1900s San Francisco trolley soon will be motoring down the Sixth Street district, aka Route 66, of Amarillo, Texas, reported the Amarillo Globe-News.

Ken and Milisa Spencer, who own Parties & Events, two antique stores in the district and a soon-to-open old-time soda shop, plan to drive a 1991 Chance trolley up and down the one-mile district and other parts of Amarillo.

Ken Spencer envisions making tours of Polk Street, picking up visitors at the downtown Courtyard by Marriot at the Historic Fisk and the future downtown hotel. Passengers will be given a historic play-by-play of various buildings through its PA system as the trolley motors from downtown to Sixth Avenue.

Then he ticks off other uses: a tour of Wolflin during the Christmas season in the heated trolley to see outdoor lights, and to use for weddings and other events. But his primary vision is along Sixth, to add a little more character to Amarillo’s most historic stretch of old Route 66. […]

Spencer plans to charge about $2 a person to ride all day. They think the market is there, based on locals and the tourists who come into their stores and elsewhere.

The Spencers were inspired by trolleys that operate in the downtowns of Memphis and Nashville. They bought the trolley from North Carolina and had it hauled to the Texas Panhandle city.

The Globe-News posted this video of the Spencers taking the trolley for a spin in their neighborhood:

The trolley may be cruising down Sixth Street as early as this week, the newspaper reported.
