The California Route 66 Museum in Victorville is planning a Route 66-themed mural on the shell of a historic building that burned two years ago, reported the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.
The newspaper said San Bernardino artist and Route 66 fan Robb McDermott of McDermott Signs will paint the mural:
In April 2010, the historic Halstead Building next door to the museum burned in a fire. It was razed, which left a vacant lot next to the museum.
The museum took the opportunity to expand its annual classic car show and also decided to put up a mural on the newly exposed wall. […]
McDermott, whose previous works include the Berlin Wall painting at Ronald Reagan Park in north San Bernardino, submitted a design that shows a portion of the Mother Road between Needles and Santa Monica, with Victorville and the museum in the middle.
The museum hopes to have the mural finished within three to four months, which would be before the International Route 66 Festival in August.
Those who wish to make a donation for the mural should call 760-951-0436, and ask for Paul Chassey or Sharon Foster.
UPDATE: Paul Chassey at the museum emailed this mockup of the mural design:
UPDATE2: Jim Conkle pointed out that the mural will go on an exposed wall of the museum, not the building that burned next door. I’ve corrected the first paragraph to reflect this.
Ron, not true about the mural being on the old building, it is gone. The mural will be on our muesum building facing the east.
We will keep you updated as we move forward.
