Rockabilly artist J.D. McPherson and punk-rock band Broncho will play shows Wednesday night at the historic Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa to raise money for Public Arts Project 66, which seeks to add public art along Route 66 in Oklahoma.
More about the art project can be found here:
The show also will serve as a celebration of Dwelling Spaces owner Mary Beth Babcock. The Tulsa World reported:
When the shop owner was named Oklahoman of the Year by Oklahoma Today magazine, the band wanted to participate in honoring her, he said.
She also will receive a medal next Wednesday night for “her enthusiasm for all things Okie, unstoppable creative spirit, and intrepid entrepreneurial drive,” said the magazine. Babcock’s store is downtown, right on Route 66.
Babcock is also doing something unique with the night’s proceeds: She’s putting them toward the Public Arts Project 66, with which she hopes to add art installations across the famed portion of highway. […]
“My store is on the old Route 66, and I have a passion for Route 66,” Babcock said. “When you have a roadside attraction, like the Blue Whale in Catoosa, people go to see it, and they buy souvenirs and stop for a cup of coffee. It helps stimulate the economy.”
McPherson has gained a lot of national attention lately. This great song and video certainly help:
And here’s Broncho, doing some guerrilla video shooting around Tulsa:
