Longtime Route 66 enthusiast Bob “Crocodile” Lile had the sign on his Lile Art Gallery painted on his building in recent days, culminating the move of his business from Sunset Art Galleries to Amarillo’s Historic San Jacinto District, aka Route 66. The area also is known as the Sixth Street Historic District.
Doug Quarles, an artist based in Tucumcari, N.M., painted the sign.
And here is some of Lile’s work, some which drew inspiration from Route 66 and Amarillo’s own Cadillac Ranch:
Lile Art Gallery is at 2719 SW Sixth Ave. in Amarillo. It is a half-block west of Georgia Street on the south side between the Sixth Street Antique Mall and Amarillo’s Route 66 Store, across the street from Amarillo Coin Exchange.
Lile welcomes Route 66 tour groups to his gallery, as well as people and families.
In addition to Lile’s artwork, artists represented in the gallery also include Doug Quarles and his wife Sharon Quarles, watercolorist Pete Morris, photographer Jim Hinckley, and the late Bob Waldmire — all whom have extensive Route 66 ties.
Lile Art Gallery also sells Route 66 jewelry, Buffalo Road conchos and snaps for motorcycle enthusiasts, TAW Promotions’ Route 66 caps and T-shirts, Route 66 chambray shirts, and other Route 66 merchandise.
The phone number is 806-664-3089.
