The new owner of the Gold Dome in Oklahoma City said he will not tear down the historic Route 66 building after buying it Thursday at a foreclosure auction, reported The Oklahoman newspaper.
David Box submitted the accepted bid of $800,000. He’s the owner of the Greens Country Club. The newspaper said:
Box, who has experience buying and developing properties on Campus Corner in Norman and in Bricktown and Automobile Alley, said he has yet to come up with a plan for the Gold Dome. He offered earnest money of $50,000 and tentatively agreed to close on Sept. 24.
Box said he does not intend to tear down the building.
Dr. Irene Lam, who in the late 1990s helped save the Gold Dome (a former bank building built in 1958), owed almost $772,000 to Bank 7 and about $50,000 in back taxes with the property. The Gold Dome in recent years had lost several tenants, including the Prohibition Room restaurant and lounge.
The Gold Dome is at Northwest 23rd Street and North Classen Boulevard (map here), both sections of Route 66 in the city.
