The Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau and The Route 66 Alliance are creating a Route 66 Photography Exhibit in Joplin, Mo., in conjunction with the International Route 66 Festival in early August.

page2image440 One Best of Show photograph will be selected by a panel of judges. The winner will be announced from the Main Stage on Saturday, Aug. 3,  during the Route 66 Alliance presentation, at 6:30 p.m. The photograph will be featured in a future edition of Route 66 Magazine.

There is no entry fee, and it’s open to amateur and professional photographers. A detailed list of requirements for submissions can be found here.

Entries must be submitted by July 15. The photographs chosen for the exhibit will be displayed at Joplin City Hall from July 29 through Aug. 23.

  1. Let me see if I understand this correctly, you give them a matted photographic print that will not be returned, in exchange for the opportunity to win giving them the right to publish the image in a magazine for no compensation to the photographer. In addition all images entered are also granting Joplin Convention & Visitors Bureau unlimited rights for marketing and promotional purposes.

  2. WARNING: By entering this contest, you are giving up significant rights to your image. Simply entering transfers your rights to the Joplin CVB. You don’t have to win, but you still lose!

The language is in the link to this story, called “Use of Images” on page 3. Please read and understand it before entering.

Your retention of Copyright is not worth much if the CVB gets to exploit your images in “advertisements, electronic media, social media platform, magazine, gallery shows or website.”

I run a photography website and will not be entering. I have a Blog entry at http://www.rt66pix.com that outlines the pitfalls of “contests” like these.

    1. To follow-up: I made two unsuccessful efforts to reach the CVB tonight at the e-mail listed in the linked contract. I sent a similar message to the Route 66 Alliance. Perhaps something can be worked out with the sponsors.

  3. Frank; been some time since I visited your site. Always enjoy your photos. Thanks for the reminder / link.
