Little America Hotel in Flagstaff plans huge expansion

The Little America Hotel near Route 66 in Flagstaff, Ariz., is planning a humongous expansion and redevelopment of its grounds, including a second hotel, reported the Arizona Daily Sun.

The proposal includes more than 1,400 residential units, 400,000 square feet of commercial space, an 18-hole golf course and a new 200-room hotel, located alongside the golf course on the banks of the Rio de Flag. The hotel would be in addition to the 247-room Little America Hotel, built in 1972.

The developer’s plan also proposes a number of off-site and on-site improvements, including extending the FUTS trails and making improvements along Butler Avenue, Herold Ranch Road and even as far away as J.W. Powell Boulevard.  The master plan is available on the city website under the section Comprehensive Planning.

The entire project is estimated to take 12 years to complete after the regional plan and city zoning ordinances have been amended.

The hotel was listed in previous editions of the “Route 66 Dining & Lodging Guide,” although it’s not in the current book.

  1. Little America alomg the Mother Road, or Little America along the Father Road… which filling station/diner/lodging came first? *Hint: The first had (and still does) their own post office.
