The Route 66 town of Waynesville, Mo., suffered widespread property damage and at least one death Tuesday after torrential rains led to flash flooding, according to The Associated Press, the Waynesville Daily Guide and other media reports.
A summary of what happened:
- At least seven inches of rain fell in nearby Fort Leonard Wood, but up to nine inches fell in adjacent areas.
- A 4-year-old boy died when he was swept away by floodwaters of Mitchell Creek. His mother remains missing.
- Roubidoux Creek, over which the Route 66 bridge spans, swelled to 600 feet wide and forced the closing of several nearby streets.
- Up to 200 homes or businesses were damaged by flooding.
- Some rescuers were stranded by rising floodwaters in areas of town.
- Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency in Pulaski County. The flooding threat is not over; more rain is predicted today.
