A bank building in Barstow, California, will unveil Saturday a new mural about the region’s turquoise history, according to a report in the Desert Dispatch.
Union Bank at 239 E. Main St. (aka Route 66) will unveil the mural at 10 a.m. Saturday. It was created by local artist Juliette Tison, who has painted 21 murals in Barstow’s downtown.
Barstow Mayor Julie Hackbarth-McIntyre and 3rd District Supervisor James Ramos are scheduled to attend the ceremony, according to Laraman Brockhurst.
“It’s a great way to celebrate the latest mural along Route 66 that promotes the historical culture of this beautiful desert,” she said. “Kay White Cloud also will be in attendance this Saturday, whose family is from the Laguna Pueblo Indian Reservation from New Mexico, which ended up in the Barstow area. This mural is beautiful and really worth having local residents coming to see it.”
Kate White Cloud, by the way, is the face featured in the mural.
A number of Route 66 towns also have attracted more visitors because of their murals, including Pontiac, Illinois; Tucumcari, New Mexico; and Cuba, Missouri.
