The Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue — which includes a prominent section about Route 66 — hit the magazine’s website Monday and was scheduled to be on newsstands this week.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes video from the magazine’s Route 66 photo shoot:
So far I’ve seen these landmarks in the shoot and other photos Sports Illustrated posted online:
- Elbow Inn restaurant and bar in Devil’s Elbow, Missouri
- Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico
- 66 Diner, Albuquerque, New Mexico
- Soulsby Service Station, Mount Olive, Illinois
- The eastern beginning of Route 66 in Chicago
- Murals in Cuba, Missouri
- Fanning Route 66 Outpost in Fanning, Missouri
- White Hall Mercantile in Halltown, Missouri
- Gay Parita Sinclair station west of Halltown, Missouri
- Windmill farm in Erick, Oklahoma
- Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum in Pontiac, Illinois
- Gateway Arch in St. Louis
- Old Chain of Rocks Bridge near St. Louis
- Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona
- Wigwam Motel in Holbrook, Arizona
- Snow Cap Drive-In in Seligman, Arizona
- Oatman, Arizona
- Oatman Hotel, Oatman, Arizona
- Cool Springs Camp, near Kingman, Arizona
- Totem Pole Park in Foyil, Oklahoma
- Santa Monica Pier
At least one of the models was game enough to take part in the Elbow Inn’s tradition of stapling her bra to the ceiling of the bar.
The magazine hasn’t arrived in bookstores in our area yet. Because of this — and a few places I may have missed — the list may not be complete. However, it’s clear from the video the camera crew and models visited more than just a smattering of places.
Lest you think the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue is just frivolous, keep in mind this stat — the annual edition counts an estimated 70 million adults reading or viewing it across various platforms each year. That’s an amazing amount of publicity for the ol’ Mother Road.
OK it does not get any better than this. Classic cars, classic landmarks, beautiful weather, and oh yeah, and some very hot, I forgot what I was going to say. Maybe someone else will think of what it was..
