On a related note, University of Oklahoma architecture students on Thursday will unveil their design ideas on how to improve Route 66 in Tulsa. The exhibition, “Route 66: String of Pearls,” will be unveiled at the The Numbered Car Co. at 1132 S. Lewis St. in Tulsa, just off 11th Street (aka Route 66).
According to a news releaseabout the event:
The student teams each focused on the redesign of one of seven major intersections along 11th Street in Tulsa, formerly Route 66. Students addressed several objectives, including an authentic cultural experience based on the history of “the Mother Road,” the different perspectives of Route 66 versus Tulsa’s 11th Street, integrating disengaged buildings into their urban design schemes, and strengthening weak nodes of activity at intersections. […]
Author and historian Michael Wallis, also on the project advisory committee and co-founder of the non-profit group Route 66 Alliance, says his organization supports the OU students’ efforts. “It’s impressive to see the results of their creativity and diligence, put to work on such an important part of Tulsa’s history,” Wallis said.
The exhibit will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the company, with live music and vendors from the Tulsa Farmers Market.
