The Albuquerque City Council on Monday night passed a $526 budget that includes $1.45 million for a design of a Route 66 visitors center on the city’s west side.
Councilors voted unanimously to approve the budget, reported the Albuquerque Journal.
There was no timetable of when the Route 66 visitors center would be designed or even its exact location. No details were posted on the city’s website.
The design will be paid for with bonds, and the city will need to spend even more money to build the structure. So such a Route 66 visitors center likely is years away.
Albuquerque has been talking about a Route 66 museum or visitors center for years, including a failed attempt in 2012 to secure an $800,000 capital-outlays grant from the state of New Mexico to build it.
