Not only does the new song by Chely Wright about a truck-stop waitress evoke the open road, but it mentions the small-but-classic Route 66 town of Tucumcari, New Mexico, about halfway through.
Here it is. The song is called “Mexico.”
The MP3 of the song may be downloaded here for $1.29.
That doesn’t necessarily mean the Tucumcari Chamber of Commerce will update its longer-than-you-might-expect “Songs of Tucumcari.” The list includes only songs that have “Tucumcari” in the title.
The number of tunes mentioning the town is far longer. FindMusicbyLyrics.com lists more than 149,000 results for Tucumcari. The best-known one probably is “Willin'” by Little Feat — with these lines:
I’ve been from Tucson to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonapah
Driven every kind of rig that’s ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn’t get weighed
