A new lodging option soon will open in Amarillo in a historic house about a mile south of Route 66.
It’s the Heritage House bed-and-breakfast at 1620 S. Polk St. (map here), which sits south of the Sixth Street alignment of Route 66. The home was built in 1906 by E.L. Dohoney and bought in 1910 by local rancher R.B. Masterson. It’s part of the Polk Street Historic District.
It’s been owned since 2011 by Marcus and Judy Norris, according to an article in the Amarillo Globe-News. He’s the former city attorney for Amarillo; she’s a former schoolteacher. The Norrises told the newspaper expect they’ll open the Heritage House to overnight travelers as soon as this week.
The Heritage House has themed rooms, with one for Route 66 travelers at a discounted price:
In an overflow room, “Route 66,” license plates from all eight states on the landmark highway hang over a fold-out bed.
With significantly less space than The Classroom ($150 per night) and The Courtroom ($135 per night), a stay for two in Route 66 costs just $30.
The B&B’s website also should be fully operational in a week or so.
With the relative dearth of vintage lodging in Amarillo, at least a few Route 66 travelers will take advantage of this century-old house just a short drive away from the Mother Road.
