Randomland Adventures videos on Route 66 are a treat

I’ve watched only a few of these, mainly because there’s so many of them. But based on the clips I’ve seen, I would subscribe to Justin Scarred‘s YouTube channel for Randomland Adventures, and pronto.

And if you’ve got a few hours to spare, I would watch all the videos he’s posting during his current Route 66 trip. Based on his most recent video, he’s made it to northeastern Oklahoma on his current eastward trek.

Here’s the description of his channel:

My name is Justin. People say I’m weird. I make videos. Sometimes they’re travel adventures, sometimes a vlog on a specific topic, finding weird things, getting wacky stuff in the mail, seeing Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Knott’s Berry Farm, filming locations, historic sites, museums, weird hotels, the ooooooOoOoooOoold west, roadside wonders and Route 66 Gems!

Here’s a good example of his Randomland Adventures series, posted from far western Oklahoma and starring Harley Russell, one of the original Mediocre Music Makers:

And here are the reasons his videos are worth checking out:

  1. He does his homework. Justin must have crammed a bunch of Route 66 books into his brain before beginning his journey, because his remarks show he knows a lot of history about the Mother Road. So it’s at least educational.
  2. He’s a snappy editor. Videographers would learn a lot from him. Though each episode is 15 to 30 minutes, there’s seldom any fat. And the lightning edits Justin uses make them much more entertaining. Even if his quips are lame, he keeps things moving.
  3. He’s goofy and fun. I described him as a blabbermouth in an earlier story. I stand by that, but he’s got enough of an off-kilter sense of humor and self-deprecation, he doesn’t come off as narcissistic.
  4. He’s got a sizable following. It’s probably wise to take him a little seriously, because at last count he boasts more than 72,000 subscribers to his channel. Any new video almost instantly logs 10,000 views within a day. So it’s probably safe to say new people are learning about Route 66 from him. Route 66 business owners and chamber of commerce directors should take note of what he says or observes.
  5. He’s got the right sensibility. His tastes for the wacky, old, weird and kitschy so matches mine, we simply ought to make him an honorary Route 66er.
  6. Sometimes, he lets the footage tell the story. Justin is smart enough to occasionally stop talking and simply let whatever happens in front of him happen. For example, in the above clip, my heart broke a little when Harley performed The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” The song obviously has become a lot more personal to Harley in light of his wife’s death a few years ago.
