What apparently is the only bed-and-breakfast operation in Tucumcari, New Mexico, opened recently near its downtown.
The Quay County Sun newspaper reported on a ribbon-cutting last week for the Dollhouse Bed & Breakfast, in a 1908 two-story Victorian home at 401 S. First St.
Debra Whittington, the owner and operator, said the new business is a “dream come true.”
“I’ve been seeing this house for 42 years, and I dreamed of owning it,” she said.
As the Doll House, the home in the downtown area, has two guest bedrooms and a full kitchen and laundry facilities, Whittington said.
The home underwent extensive remodeling for several months in which some rooms were converted to bedrooms, each with a bath, and a new wrap-around porch was added, Wittington said.
The Dollhouse Bed & Breakfast doesn’t have a dedicated website, but it has a Facebook page.
Whittington in a text explained more about its overnight rates:
A nights stay is $200 and includes exclusive use of the entire first floor. (Internet cable, fiber optic internet). For $100 extra, both rooms are available. […] Currently we are taking reservations through (Facebook) messenger or calling me directly at (575) 708-0996.
The Dollhouse sits about one-third of a mile north of Route 66.
Whittington said on the Dollhouse’s Facebook page last month when the city’s Planning and Zoning Board unanimously approved a variance for the business, it didn’t have a category for bed-and-breakfast operations in a commercial area.
Whittington and her husband Mark operated the Pony Soldier Motel for many years along Route 66 in Tucumcari until it closed in 2004. Debra Whittington also has written self-published books about Tucumcari, including “2 for $6 on Route 66.”
