The Angels on the Route restaurant in downtown Baxter Springs, Kansas, has closed at least temporarily until spring.
Sue Gast, who helped revitalize the historic building into a restaurant more than 10 years ago, wrote in an email Thursday:
My business is temporarily closed for the season and hoping to open in April. We will still be serving our frozen custard and I am trying to get the Route 66 “Pie Guy” in there to serve his home made pies along with the frozen custard. Still committed to the Route and Baxter. Will let you know more details as they happen.
Alan and Cheri McCamey took over management of the business in late 2015. ROUTE Magazine said in a Facebook post earlier this week the restaurant had closed.
In a follow-up comment, the magazine stated:
So many great venues and cafes are struggling. Next time on the road everyone, let’s support great Route 66 located brands.
An email and phone message to the restaurant went unanswered.
According to a late 2015 article in the Galena Sentinel Times, Gast still owned the building.
The building originally was constructed in 1865 as Cooper’s Dry Goods Store. It later became a pharmacy, drugstore and doughnut shop before Gast and Sue Rammage bought it and reopened it as Angels on the Route.
UPDATE: In a follow-up email, Gast said the the McCameys had to step away from the restaurant because of “family matters.”
Gast also wrote:
I have several interested parties that want to open it by April. I still own the building. So if you know of anyone interested in it please let me know.
