The Ford Motor Co., Team Mustang, Ford Performance and HoonDog Performance Group (HPG) are planning a Chicago-to-Los Angeles trip on Route 66 that will include two 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt prototype cars on display.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Bullitt, the groups will drive Route 66 westward from May 25 to June 3.
According to a news release:
The tour will feature seven interesting stops along Route 66 as well as a whole host of historic landmarks along the way. HPG will host car Show ‘n’ Shines during their Meet-&-Greet cookouts in Yukon, OK, and Tucumcari, NM, as well as mini car shows at Ford Dealers in St. Robert, MO, Winslow, AZ, and Laughlin, NV. This unforgettable journey along Route 66 through eight states is your chance to take an once-in-a-lifetime road trip back in history on “America’s Mother Road.”
The event starts in Chicago, Illinois and ends at the Santa Monica Pier in California. The tour event culminates in Chino Hills, CA, for The Friends of Steve McQueen Reception Dinner on Friday June 1st and the Car Show on June 2nd at Boys Republic, Steve McQueen’s childhood boarding school.
For those unfamiliar with the Bullitt, this famous car-chase scene on the streets and highways of San Francisco from the 1968 movie of the same name will suffice in showing why the car became a legend:
More about the tour can be found on the HoonDogs’ website here. The registration page for those Ford fans wanting to take part is here.

This would be a lifetime experience. Mustangs all across the mother road. My 67 Mustang was not ready to go when we drove the entire route from Santa Monica to Chicago. Hats off to your blog for keeping 66 on the map.
I have my own Bullitt tribute car…a 2016 Mustang(Guard/Green)with chrome rims I bought 2 years ago….Mustang’s Rules!
