Tulsa adding Route 66 stencils on pavement

The city of Tulsa last week began painting Route 66 shields on the pavement of the Mother Road on the east and west sides of town.

The Tulsa Route 66 Commission stated on its Facebook page it wants to place the shields along regular intervals on the entire stretch of Tulsa’s Route 66.

The shields on the road aim to help novice travelers trace the historic highway. It also prevents the theft of Route 66 signs — a common problem along the route.

The local television station provided an aerial view of one of the Route 66 shields on the road:

The shield on the road is an idea that’s slowly but surely caught on in several places over the years, including more recently in South Pasadena, California.

  1. Thank you for sharing! Phase One has a few shields on the west side of Tulsa’s Route 66 corridor and several on the east side, starting on the edge of Catoosa and leading travelers towards the Route 66 Gateway east of 11th and 129th. It’s a good start and we’ll get more placed once Tulsa’s 2019 road projects are completed.
