The Supertam on 66 ice-cream shop, known for its collection of Superman memorabilia in Carterville, Missouri, has closed for the winter season about a month early because the owner is battling a lingering illness. He plans to reopen by spring.
Owner Larry Tamminen posted this message Nov. 1 on the shop’s Facebook page:
Tamminen told Route 66 News by text message he usually closes for the winter in late November or early December. He said he’ll reopen in March.
Tamminen elaborated with KOAM-TV about his illness and his efforts to help loyal customers during his absence:
“Come down with pneumonia, and it’s worked into something else in my lungs and it takes away all your energy,” explained Tamminen.
He’s closing up shop for the year, selling three gallon tubs of his ice cream for $45, hoping to get some rest so he can get back to doing what he loves: sharing Superman and ice cream on Route 66.
“The main people, Chinese, people from the UK, okay, France, New Zealand, Australia, from all over the world. It’s really neat. I didn’t know when I opened it up that the neatest part about this ice cream parlor would be meeting the people, but that’s the neatest part is meeting all the people from all over the world,” said Tamminen.
Tamminen is an indefatigable guy. That pneumonia must be pretty bad for him to take it easy. Here’s an example of his high-energy style:
In addition to all his Superman stuff, the shop is known for its Superman ice cream that comes in bright blue, red and yellow. Children can’t resist ordering those vivid colors.
This closure is a reminder a few mom-and-pop businesses shutter for the winter near this time of year because tourist numbers slow to a trickle. If you’re traveling Route 66 from now through February, you might call ahead to see whether a place you have your heart set on visiting is open.
