The New Mexico Route 66 Association recently gave out Heritage Awards to Glenn’s Bakery in Gallup, May Cafe in Albuquerque and Pecos Theatre in Santa Rosa for their efforts at revitalization.
The Pecos Theatre at 219 S. Fourth St. (aka Route 66) was honored for renovating the oldest theater on Route 66, built in 1917. It reopened in September after years of work and $1 million following its closing in 2010.
Glenn’s Bakery at 901 Route 66 in Gallup was honored for its recent sign installation that served as “a glowing tribute to the golden age of Route 66 neon signs.”
Finally, the May Cafe at 111 Louisiana Blvd. SE (near Route 66) was honored for restoring the severed arms of its Muffler Man fiberglass statue. The figure lost its arms during a windstorm some years ago. KOB-TV in Albuquerque did a story about the award here.
