The Castaneda Hotel and Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, will reopen May 18 and La Posada in Winslow, Arizona, will reopen June 8 after closing in March because of the coronavirus.
Allan Affeldt, who owns the properties, said those are the recommended dates for easing restrictions in each of those states, though that obviously could change.
Affeldt wrote in a Facebook post on Monday:
This week we will update our on-line reservation availability. We have already reopened our phone lines.
When you arrive we will have all sorts of new protocols from reception to housekeeping. Things will get better and easier as we all adapt, and we are grateful for your understanding and cooperation. We are not certain when the restaurants will reopen, but we are working to coordinate with them for at least take-out. Bar Castaneda is already making fabulous take-out meals.
We are so grateful for your support through this difficult time. Safe travels until we meet again!
He also wrote:
After we posted about the challenges of being closed and of getting financing through the COVID pandemic we received many requests for future reservations, and even some very generous donations. Thank you!
It also should be noted Affeldt was appointed as a member of the 15-person economic recovery council for the state of New Mexico after the pandemic eases.
The Castaneda posted on its Facebook page about a week ago that renovations on the final four ground-floor rooms on the hotel’s north wing should be done by summer. That means the years of refurbishing the formerly neglected property should be nearly complete by the reopening.
Affeldt’s Legal Tender Saloon and Eating House in Lamy, New Mexico, will remain closed until further notice. Restaurants have a tougher hill to climb with the pandemic before the state fully reopens them to diners.
La Posada remains a key landmark along Route 66 in Winslow. Las Vegas, New Mexico, technically isn’t on the route but is a common side trip for Route 66 fans exploring the Santa Fe Loop alignment that dates to the 1920s through late 1930s.
